I asked a friend of mine who moved to Montana many years ago to suggest the location for this story. I wanted the best place (in his opinion) in Montana to start a ranch in the 1830s. He didn’t hesitate. He suggested the Bitterroot Valley.

St. Mary’s Mission in current day Stevensville was not only the first settlement in the valley—it was also the first settlement in what would become Montana.

The historical character that I used in this book was Father Ravalli, the first surgeon and the first pharmacist in the Montana Territory. As I researched, I couldn’t believe that I had never hear of this amazing man, a priest who even has a county named after him. Down the Long Valley is a story of loss, redemption, and new beginnings. The characters in this book quickly became favorites and you will see more of them in future novels.
